Just buy the first game. Jak 2 tried too hard to implement GTA-style mechanics and systems, and that destroyed the game for me. That, plus the fact that it's a very difficult game and that its checkpoint system isn't good. Jak 3 is just Jak 2.5. It's too short and doesn't really add anything of substance.
Those Erol race missions got me a few times. When I was younger, for PS2 Jak II, the little mini game in the fat guys bar was difficult for my younger self, had to get a friends older brother to beat it, lol. I got revenge and platinum’d them all in a row for the PS3 release tho!
